In May 1946, my father France Pak Lin got the permission from Grand father to marry Lise Francette Ah Lim on the condition that they would soon after move to China to prepare the grounds for the return of the family back home in China. My grand parents wanted my mother to learn to speak Hakka and to embrace the Hakka culture. Soon after, they boarded a ship to Hong Kong. After a short stay in Hong Kong they traveled to Mei Shien via Swa Tow: sea ferry to the port of Swa Tow from Hong Kong and by a river barge up stream from Swa Tow.

They had never travelled outside Mauritius before. Their knowledge of English and French were helpful. Fortunately, father had many Mauritian friends settled Hong Kong of the like of Edouard Leung and Li Wan Po, who helped them during his transit in Hong Kong.

Poor mother, an island young girl on her first trip to foreign land, pregnant of me, her first child, migrating to a small village in China where she could hardly communicate with the extend family and relatives. It was hard time there. There was no running water nor had any toilet in their home. She had to learn to live in a farm in remote China. The ways and means of living as well as the standard were well below what she was used to before.

When the time of delivery came, mother told me that she was taken on a bicycle from the ancestral home and farm to the hospital managed by German catholic nurses in town. It was in the hospital that I visited in 1999: 52 years later that I was born.

Only a few months after my birth, the situation in South China became unbearable for my parents: they lived the invasion of hooligans in the province and the imminent civil wars reaching the region. Father immediately got me and mother in a flight on a small military aircraft to SwaTow whilst he got on a river barge to the port. That was my inaugural aircraft flight. Then together, all three of us took a sea ferry back to Hong Kong where we stayed for sometime in Wan Chai at St Francis hostel before catching a steamer to Mauritius.

L’Eglise place la fête du Christ Roi dans le dernier dimanche du calendrier liturgique. Je suis sur que l’intention  de l’Eglise est de conclure d’année par le plus important événement : Le Christ Roi étant l’objet principal de notre foi chrétienne. En bref, c’est ce que j’ai retenu de ma messe de ce matin.

 Je note par contre que l’Evangile du Christ Roi et combiné avec le récit du bon larron. Je conçois donc le Christ Roi continue sa mission de sauver les âmes qui désirent comme Il l’a fait sur la croix.

Je vous livre les écrits de Saint Jean Chrysostome (vers 345-407), évêque d’Antioche puis de Constantinople, docteur de l’Église.
« Une inscription était placée au-dessus de sa tête : ‘ Celui-ci est le roi.»  « Seigneur, souviens-toi de moi quand tu viendras inaugurer ton Règne ». Le larron n’a pas osé faire cette prière avant d’avoir déposé par son aveu le fardeau de ses péchés. Tu vois, chrétien, quelle est la puissance de la confession. Il a avoué ses péchés et le paradis s’est ouvert ; il a avoué ses péchés et il a eu assez d’assurance pour demander le Royaume après ses brigandages…
Tu veux connaître le Royaume ? Que vois-tu donc ici qui y ressemble ? Tu as sous les yeux les clous et une croix, mais cette croix même, disait Jésus, est bien le signe du Royaume. Et moi, en le voyant sur la croix, je le proclame roi. Ne revient-il pas à un roi de mourir pour ses sujets ? Lui-même l’a dit : « Le bon pasteur donne sa vie pour ses brebis » (Jn 10,11). C’est également vrai pour un bon roi ; lui aussi donne sa vie pour ses sujets. Je le proclamerai donc roi à cause du don qu’il a fait de sa vie : « Seigneur, souviens-toi de moi quand tu seras dans ton Royaume. »

Seigneur, en ce jour ou l’Eglise célèbre Ta royauté, j’avoue ma condition de pécheur, mes fautes, mes faiblesses et implore le pardon : donne moi de partager ton éternel bonheur.

What is Islamic banking?

Last week one of my colleagues at the APM club could not attend a seminar because he was attending a curse in South Africa on Islamic banking. I recall a few years ago, my very good friend Eric, was sent to Malaysia to study Islamic banking and financing. Chota also years ago, was involved in setting up investment portfolio of shares from the Mauritius stock exchange that were compliant with Islamic rules. I heard that Chee Peng Tan who I knew years back will be organizing some seminars in Mauritius on the same subject.

The accumulation of the recent events moved me to look closer in the subject and possibly to refresh and upgrade my knowledge thereon. As far as I recall there was a strong element of social equity in the practice of Islamic banking, earning interests on money was not allowed and also there was prohibition in investing in economic activities which were in opposition to the Muslim faith such as: liquor, gambling, pork, drugs.

Admittedly, if Mauritius has aimed to be a world financial center or at least a meaningful regional financial center: the operators have to provide service to this type of funds which are growing in leaps and bounds. Could Mauritian institutions join the Lariba Islamic Banking network? I would well imaging that a large amount of the petro-dollars are invested through Islamic Banking.

What I gathered in summary:

Islam not only prohibits dealing in interest but also in liquor, pork, gambling, pornography and anything else, which the Shariah (Islamic Law) deems Haram (unlawful). Islamic banking is an instrument for the development of an Islamic economic order. Some of the salient features of this order may be summed up as:

1. While permitting the individual the right to seek his economic well-being, Islam makes a clear distinction between what is Halal (lawful) and what is haram (forbidden) in pursuit of such economic activity. In broad terms, Islam forbids all forms of economic activity, which are morally or socially injurious.
2. While acknowledging the individual’s right to ownership of wealth legitimately acquired, Islam makes it obligatory on the individual to spend his wealth judiciously and not to hoard it, keep it idle or to squander it.
3. While allowing an individual to retain any surplus wealth, Islam seeks to reduce the margin of the surplus for the well-being of the community as a whole, in particular the destitute and deprived sections of society by participation in the process of Zakat.
4. While making allowance for the ways of human nature and yet not yielding to the consequences of its worst propensities, Islam seeks to prevent the accumulation of wealth in a few hands to the detriment of society as a whole, by its laws of inheritance.
5. Viewed as a whole, the economic system envisaged by Islam aims at social justice without inhibiting individual enterprise beyond the point where it becomes not only collectively injurious but also individually self-destructive.

The Islamic financial system employs the concept of participation in the enterprise, utilizing the funds at risk on a profit-and- loss-sharing basis. This by no means implies that investments with financial institutions are necessarily speculative. This can be excluded by careful investment policy, diversification of risk and prudent management by Islamic financial institutions.

It is possible, that investment in Islamic financial institutions can provide potential profit in proportion to the risk assumed to satisfy the differing demands of participants in the contemporary environment and within the guidelines of the Shariah.

The concept of profit-and-loss sharing, as a basis of financial transactions is a progressive one as it distinguishes good performance from the bad and the mediocre. This concept therefore encourages better resource management.

Islamic banks are structured to retain a clearly differentiated status between shareholders’ capital and clients’ deposits in order to ensure correct profit-sharing according to Islamic Law.

Could some of the funds handled in Mauritius be ‘Islam finance’ compliant?

I fully subscribe to the statement below which have to be read without any religious undertone:

We Advocate Socially Responsible Investing. We DO NOT Invest in Alcohol Related Businesses, Gambling, Gaming, unhealthy food products and Unethical Activities. We do not invest in Businesses that harm the Environment and that does not treat its employees and customers fairly. We are Sensitive about who we deal with. We scrutinize our customers and investors as to their character and community standing.

The latest I have read on UFO?

promoting international cooperation among governments and the military in investigating UFOs.

It looks serious matter to me, reading the stuff. With my curious mind, every thing interests me. My  curiosity thirst has been quenched.

How will this affect my life? What are these unidentified phenomena and how will they impact  the world? I leave it to the military and scientists to sort out.

Admittedly these news & information provide good materials for writers, the film industry as well as the press to make up stories to earn a good living.

What drives the eagerness of man to consume such news or information? Are we becoming greedy for information and strive for knowledge for the sake of knowledge itself?

Novelty, Fear and Uncertainty are definitely the driving factors. The media have understood these elements of the human behaviours and continue to exploit these aspects. The information  is transformed in a marketable commodities for consumption.  Bad news and preferably tragic ones are the best sellers of the press. Writing on the bad behaviours of people is news as it is uncommon. Describing the good deeds of your neighbour is normal and natural: therefore is ‘no news’ except when they are exceptional.

‘The bishop was bitten by his dog’ is ‘no news’. ‘The dog was bitten by the bishop is a press scoop.

I conclude that whilst there is material for militaries & scientists to investigate in UFO for fear of some outer planetary invasion, we should not lend ourselves to be exploited by the news around such information.

Quand j’ai confiance dans le Seigneur Dieu Jésus, je ne devrai pas être effrayé. Il saura me guider toujours et partout. Il me tient par la main et guide mes pas. L’annonce des temps difficiles, au lieu d’être un temps d’éloignement, ou je chercherai avant tout ma sécurité, le Seigneur dans ce texte, fait appel au maintien de confiance en Lui et sollicite ma persévérance. Tenir bon dans ses moments là me semble difficile. Malheur à moi, de ne pas tenir bon, car je suis averti. Comme IL est bon, Il saura me donner en temps voulu la persévérance qu’il faudra, faut il que je sois demandeur ? Faut il que j ai pris l’habitude par ma prière continue d’être demandeur et toujours proche de Lui ? La fidélité qui engendrait la fidélité ?

Ainsi en anticipation de mes possibles faiblesses, Seigneur je le demande d’être à mes cotes maintenant et surtout dans les temps difficiles ou je risque de succomber. Donne moi d’être fort en tout temps et de rendre ma foi en toi inébranlable.

Do you know Alain Simon? The name could be very common. Google found 2600000 pages to a inquiry in the English & French pages on the names. Two first names: Simon and Alain flocked together. But past yesterday, Alain Simon has a new significance for me;Alain Simon opened my gate to the new world of Geopolitics. Alain Simon is a professional speaker, entertainer, world observer, and researcher, thinker with a vivid and alert mind. Alain Simon is an economist and lawyer by training; he leads a consulting firm International Development, Groupe Phileas and contributed to many magazines and publications. He accompanied for several years business strategies to COFACE. He is the author of two books, Le sens des cartes (1977) and geopolitique et strategies d’entreprises (1974) which was award best book of the year in the economic section. He gave last thursday, a brilliant 7 hours lecture to the APM group shared his reading of the economic world through the prism of Geopolitics using up to date observations.

What I enjoyed most was the use of multi perceptional positioning on different world maps with layers of different legends to read the intentions of the world political decision makers and by extension to identify their strategies and predict the possible moves. He told the group how to read an emerging trend as opposed to a breakthrough. 1985 according to him is a milestone date for contemporary world politics. The advent of M. Gorbachev at the helm of the then USSR marked the end of the cold war and the start of the next war.

I had always thought that the strength of the Euro was the making and initiative of the Europeans to conquer the supremacy of the green bill dollars. He proved my thinking wrong. A strong Euro is in the plan of the US. The Euro up to now is the currency traded for 20% of world trade which was the position of the D mark before the advent of the Euro. What is the use of being a strong currency whilst not being a sought after currency? No doubt the US is still the main player and dealer in world, may it be for world equilibrium of war & peace or world economy. He demonstrated that all the moves of the US in spheres of economics, cultural, trade are governed by its Geopolitical intent & strategies. According to him, American Geopolitics rules all. Economy is only one of the means of Geopolitics.

What then is Geopolitics? The study of geopolitics has undergone a major renaissance during the past decade. Multidisciplinary in its scope, Geopolitics includes all aspects of the social sciences with particular emphasis on political geography, international relations, the territorial aspects of political science and international law. With globalization, I now realize how Geopolitics influences all, including the smallest business one may operate in remote Mauritius. Entrepreneurs beware, keep watch. Understanding and following up Geopolitics is a must to succeed in international trade.

Being told how to cook and owning a recipe do not make you a cook, is it not? You become an accountant after spending years of studies in the appropriate field and pass the examination which tests your knowledge of the subjects. You are given the title of accountant by the governing bodies such as ACCA or Chartered Accountant ( CA) only after having passed the exams and having practiced accountancy for a number of years under specified conditions.

Knowledge by itself does not give you a trade; practice and experience must be included. How many students, who have learned management for years, albeit at university level, can be called managers in absence of any practice?

How many of us know how to speak? Does the knowledge qualify us to become a public speaker? Likewise, we can learn leadership and leadership skills, but until we have practiced leadership for some years, we cannot pretend to be leaders. Toastmasters offer you the possibility of learning communication & leadership skills and practicing them. I recommend my readers to try out and join one of the Toastmasters club within your vicinity. I laughed when I read on today’s Le Mauricien out of the Societe section “astuce Prendre la Parole” which to my liking, came out of the blue. It is better than nothing. Was it meant for the parliamentaries we voted in, where the foremost skills should be those of communication & leadership? Thank you Le Mauricien for the knowledge but do run to Toastmasters for the practice.

ASTUCES

Prendre la parole

Si la prise de parole est le plus souvent associée à un orateur face à un public important, nous savons que les enjeux de nos communications orales ne dépendent pas du nombre de spectateurs, de la taille de la salle ou de la hauteur de la tribune mais plus de la manière dont nous nous exprimons.

Le trac

Devoir d’adresser à un public est un puissant générateur de trac et cela n’est pas forcément un handicap. C’est la prise de conscience de l’enjeu qui engendre le trac : il faut convaincre, s’exprimer clairement, séduire, sans quoi le propos, aussi intéressant soit-il, n’atteindra pas l’auditoire. Le trac peut être aussi une source d’énergie et de punch dont on doit user à bon escient : un trac bien négocié est un trac utile. Il mobilise l’énergie dont on a besoin pour faire face à une situation inhabituelle ou déstabilisante, il permet le passage à l’acte de la prise de parole qui, lui-même, fait disparaître le trac.

La respiration

Les deux temps important de la respiration sont l’inspiration et l’expiration. Il existe trois types de respiration, soit claviculaire, thoracique et abdominale, mais toutefois seule cette dernière, celle qui sollicite les muscles abdominaux, est adaptée à l’expression orale. Cette respiration par le ventre est la première que nous avons connue car elle est innée. Toutefois, au fil des années, nous perdons tous les techniques de cette respiration apaisante. Alors il suffit de la travailler régulièrement et sans précipitation et vous parviendrez à respirer de cette façon à volonté. Il faut vous rééduquer à vous calmer dans les moments de trac afin justement d’en faire un allié. Petit exercise pratique : allongé sur le dos avec une main sur le ventre, inspirez profondément et ensuite relâchez progressivement la tension abdominale. À répéter à plusieurs reprises pour décompresser tout en douceur.

La décontraction

Les tensions parasites entravent votre expression et votre liberté de mouvement. Votre attitude physique générale, vos mains, ou d’éventuels tics nerveux, sont autant de signaux que perçoit votre interlocuteur et qui le renseignent à votre insu.

Plus votre corps sera libre, plus votre parole coulera avec aisance.

Comme un sportif, travaillez la détente du corps pour le rendre disponible et plus fort. Une méthode simple : contractez une partie du corps puis relâchez progressivement la tension, faites-le pour les muscles du visage et jusqu’au bout des orteils, petit bout par petit bout. Plus forte sera la tension, plus forte sera la détente !

La préparation

Trois approches pour se préparer à des événements importants : la visualisation, l’automotivation et le corps starter de l’émotion

1) La visualisation

Elle s’utilise de deux manières :

Premièrement, se visualiser en train de faire une prise de parole brillante, dans le lieu et face au public et deuxièmement : visualiser des images personnelles qui vous mettent dans un état positif, agréable et disponible.

2) L’automotivation :

La pensée positive a fait ses preuves. N’en minimisez pas les résultats et dites-vous que tout ira bien.

3) Le corps starter de l’émotion

Développée par le Studio Pygmalion, cette approche a fait ses preuves : vous pouvez par le corps créer des émotions positives pour aborder la prise de parole. L’utilisation des gestes, des postures et de la respiration vont vous aider à exprimer par le corps vos émotions.

L’articulation

L’articulation est la puissance de la diction, qui est quant à elle un élément fondamental de l’expression orale, qui se décompose en articulation et prononciation.

Dans un premier temps, c’est le minimum de la politesse que d’articuler pour bien se faire comprendre. Au-delà de ce premier constat, articuler c’est aussi se donner les moyens d’être plus fort et plus efficace.

L’appui sur les voyelles et les diphtongues donne de l’amplitude et renforce la notion de plaisir et de ” gourmandise ” des mots. En s’appuyant sur les consonnes, vous donnerez du poids aux mots et vous consoliderez votre impact et votre conviction. Entraînez-vous régulièrement avant une prise de parole.

Quelques phrases à prononcer et à articuler :

* Dis-moi gros gras grand grain d’orge quand te dégros gras grand grain d’orgeras-tu ? Je me dégros gras grand grain d’orgerai, quand tous les gros gras grand grain d’orge se seront dégros gras grand grain d’orgés.

* Le fisc fixe exprès chaque taxe fixe excessive exclusivement au luxe et à l’exquis.

* Qui crut croquer une crevette crue croqua une croquette croquante.

* L’huile de huit huiliers huile sans bruit les huis de huit huissiers.

Le silence

On dit souvent que la parole est d’argent et le silence est d’or. Dicton qui se révèle exact surtout lors d’un discours car le silence est alors un bon moyen de reprendre sa respiration et de ménager ses effets. Faites des silences, des respirations et laissez respirer votre public. Le silence est aussi un outil pour être à l’écoute du public, s’il y a des réactions par rapport à ce que vous venez de dire.

Le sourire

Devant votre public, n’oubliez pas de sourire car c’est un signe d’ouverture qui représente une certaine disponibilité. N’oubliez pas que l’humeur de votre auditoire dépend de votre humeur à vous. Si vous choisissez d’être joyeux et ouvert, vous vous retrouverez en face d’un public positivement réactif. L’humeur possède la particularité de déteindre sur votre interlocuteur, vous l’avez sûrement constaté, et cela s’appelle l’empathie. Profitez-en au maximum pour rendre l’audience plus disposée à votre égard !

The President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus dismisses concerns over the environment and accuses Al Gore of being an “apostle of arrogance”. I had the opportunity to watch this BBC show of Hard Talk today. I found the president to be convincing and sincere in the interview. What if Vaclav Klaus was right? Is there a world conspiracy on global warming? Could the opinions of the score of thousand of ‘experts’ prove to be erroneous?

Can you imagine the amount of energy and world resources put behind the threat of global warming and climate changes? Who are the immediate beneficiaries of these initiatives? The predictions that I have read from some quarters seems apocalyptic.

I wish President Vaclav Klaus is right. I sense that there is exaggeration on the part of so called ‘experts’ to predict doom’s day soon. They want to shock the world to move to a cleaner environment and some politicians are riding on the wave to their benefits. On the other side, we have to be prudent. To discard the signs observed, like the erosion of the permafrost in the arctic region, would be to act irresponsibly. Vaclav Klaus is right in the sense that the decision makers are not the ‘experts’: they are the politicians. Often, too often the criteria of decisions used by politicians are not reasonable. They decide on what is right for them; not for the right reason to the benefit of mankind.

Dimanche dernier en écrivant mon blog, pour un moment j’étais presque au paradis. Pour exprimer cette joie profonde ressentie, le terme « (je suis) aux anges » m’est venu à la tête. Ce terme  est souvent  utilisé dans notre langue.

 Pourquoi cette expression ? Bien sur être au paradis serait être parmi les anges : c’est très imaginable. Dès que nous créeons (fictivement) cette situation par un acte de visualisation, nous pourrons tout de suite être envahi par cette émotion intense de joie et de bonheur qui y correspond. Ainsi, le ressenti de l’émotion similaire s’exprimerait en mots par «être aux anges ». 

Par définition les anges sont ni masculins ou féminins.  S.Gregoire de Nysse, théologien du 4eme siècle écrit « semblables  aux anges » en commentaires à l’Evangile de dimanche dernier : où il était question  de savoir dans le paradis qui serait l’époux de la femme qui s’est marié à plusieurs frères successivement ?

Nous ne trouvons nullement nécessaire de voir en ceux que la résurrection aura transformes la différence sexuelle qu’a présent la nature comporte nécessairement ; néanmoins que tous forment un seul genre, lorsque tous seront ‘un seul corps dans le christ’, conformes a un seul caractère, nous n’en doutons pas,car sur tous l’image divine resplendira également ; mais ce qui remplacera de telles propriétés lors de la transformation de notre nature, nous affirmons que ce sera mieux que tout ce qu’on peut imaginer par la pensée…

Peut-être, si l’on dit que la qualité propre des traits moraux est la forme sous laquelle chacun sera reconnaissable, ne sera-t-on pas complètement dans le faux…Dans la vie présente, l’expression du visage révèle celle, secrète, de l’âme…, de même une fois la nature passé à une condition plus divine, l’homme prend la forme que lui donnent ses traits moraux, sans que son essence soit différente de son apparence, mais il est connu tel qu’il est…

Une seule et unique grâce se manifestera en tous, de sorte que chacun rende grâce à son voisin de la même joie, et qu’ainsi chacun se réjouisse en voyant la beauté de l’autre et le réjouisse à son tour.
